Spring-clean your IT: the systems audit every small office should do
Spring is a natural moment to clear out the digital clutter that quietly piles up all year.
Just like the supply closet, your IT accumulates junk, and some of it is risky. A short annual audit catches problems before they become incidents.
The checklist
- Accounts: remove logins for people who have left and trim admin rights to who truly needs them
- Hardware: list anything too old to receive security updates and plan replacements
- Backups: confirm they run, and actually test a restore, see backup & recovery
- Updates: make sure automatic updates are on across devices
- Software: uninstall what you no longer use; every app is a potential door
Make it a habit
Once a year, on a date you will remember, beats never. Organizations on a managed plan get this continuously instead of as a scramble, but any audit is better than none.
